Escalator/Travelator Operator Training is a specialized training program that prepares individuals to safely and effectively operate escalators and moving walkways (travelators). The focus of the training is safety, daily operation, monitoring and how to address special or emergency situations so passengers move through public areas such as malls, airports, metro stations, and commercial complexes in a safe and efficient manner.This course develops an understanding of escalator and travelator basic design, functionality, and components. The operators are trained on start-up and shutdown procedures, emergency stop function and how to use safety devices. Emphasis is placed on how to identify potential hazards that include loose clothing, luggage handling, and passenger errors; thereby operators can proactively do something in these situations.

The training covers how to conduct routine inspection measures, as well as how to identify fault and communicate efficiently and correctly to maintenance. The operators should understand signage, control panels, and consider standard operating procedures as mandated in regulations. The practical training consists of observing escalators and travelators in real time, while safely monitoring passengers, and crowd control during peak hours as well as how to effectively respond when emergencies arise, such as assessing power failure, responding to accidents, or when equipment fails; therefore all passenger safety is maintained.
